Day 616 [June 10/10] -- Brisk winds provide best DMG in 17 days

Today's Report
June 10/10 0800 JST / 1400 local

Position:  15°55'N, 137°44'W (North Pacific Ocean)

Remaining distance to Yokohama finish: 17.8%

Favorable winds from the northeast that hit 24 kts at times yesterday pushed him 140 nm for his best DMG in 17 days. He said he has the genoa down to 50%, describing it as "more like a storm jib" as he shortens sail to keep from overpowering the vessel in the increasing trade winds. He never saw the winds less than 16 kts during the period.

He is also being cautious about increased strain on sheets and other running rigging.

The Hawaii waypoint has been adjusted to reflect the diversion to Honolulu, which is 200 nm northwest of the original marker. Honolulu ETA is approximately 9 days, assuming a 125 nm daily average (taking into account improving trade winds).
